Apollo 13 (1995, 140 minutes, PG)

April 13, 2020, at 9:08 Central Time, marks the 50th anniversary of the oxygen tank explosion in Apollo 13‘s service module. To commemorate NASA’s “successful failure,” the Library will offer a special screening of the 1995 film, Apollo 13, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two Oscars (Best Film Editing and Best Sound).

About the film

This award-winning Hollywood drama, directed by Ron Howard, is based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar landing mission. Astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit. But when an oxygen tank explodes two days into the mission, the scheduled moon landing is called off and numerous technical problems threaten both the astronauts’ survival and their safe return to Earth.

The film will be screened at the UMKC Student Union Theater. A 30-minute audience discussion and Q&A will follow the screening.
