About Second Saturdays

Second Saturday Conversations feature interesting sci-tech and engineering speakers and topics in an informal setting. The programs are held in the Auditorium or Main Reading Room from 11:00 a.m. to Noon.

The exhibition galleries and the William N. Deramus III Cosmology Theater are open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Free admission and parking. Reference, research, and circulation services are not available on Second Saturdays.

The gallery talk

Join curators Jason Dean and Amelia Nelson from 11:00 a.m. to noon for a gallery talk of their exhibition, Gifts of the Nile.

The speakers

 Jason W. Dean is Vice President for Special Collections at the Linda Hall Library. His areas of research interest include special collections administration, American color printing, the life and work of Carl Hertzog, and metadata for rare books and special collections. Prior to coming to Linda Hall Library, Jason was Director of Special Collections & Archives at Southwestern University. He has previously held positions at the University of Arkansas and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, where he started their library. He earned an undergraduate degree in history from Hardin-Simmons University and his MS in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University. Jason has also completed coursework at Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. He is a member of the Grolier Club, and a past Institute of Library and Museum Services-Rare Book School fellow. Jason is active in several professional organizations related to history, rare books, and archives.

Amelia Nelson is Head of Library and Archives at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Spencer Art Reference Library. Amelia has worked at SARL since 2012 and was promoted to oversee the Library and Archives in mid-2018. Previously, she worked at the Kansas City Art Institute’s Jannes Library and was the Director of the Delaware College of Art and Design’s Edgar A. Thronson Library. Amelia holds an MA in Art History from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, an MA in Library Science from the University of Missouri, and a BA in Architecture from Kansas State University. Amelia’s focus on developing new ways to connect library visitors to museum and library collections that inspire, educate, and engage has led to the publication of several articles and presentations as well as her current role at co-editor of the forthcoming book, The New Art Museum Library.

Admission tickets

The gallery talk is free and open to the public; however, e-tickets are required.

Parking

The main entrance to the Library grounds is on Cherry Street. Parking is free in Library parking lots and along the west side of Holmes Street between 51st and 52nd streets. The Linda Hall Library is not affiliated with UMKC. Parking in all UMKC lots is by permit or meter. Doors open at 10 a.m.
